Residential Moving and Packing Tips
Sometimes a move can be overwhelming. Often many forget some of the simplest details. Here you will find a helpful list of tips.
1. Book a moving company or a rental truck one month in advance Spring and Summer months may need more advanced booking . Some movers may need 2-3 months in advance to ensure availability on your desired date in the spring/summer months.
The beginning and end of the month moving trucks are often booked fast, as moving companies may also be. Be sure to confirm your date!
2. Order necessary moving supplies. (Boxes, bubble wrap, special wrapping paper for artwork, etc. ) a month in advance.
3. Locate a storage unit if you will be needing one, and reserve a unit.
4. Sort and discard, or donate unwanted (useable) items.
5. Notify doctors, dentists, chiropractors, and other service providers at least two weeks in advance with your new address, and if you already know the new phone number provide it as well.
6. Be sure to notify your Human Resources and/or Payroll department at work of your new address.
7. When you begin packing; clearly label boxes with your name, the contents, and the new address for your packed box. (Example: dishes-kitchen-address/or storage) Be sure to write if there are fragile items in the box.
8. Notify utility companies and services, as applicable:
Telephone ,Cell Phone, Internet Service Provider
Electric
Water
Gas/Propane
Trash Service
Home security/alarm
Gardener
Housekeepers
Cable
Pool Service
Baby Sitters/ pet sitters, or elderly care .
9 .Notify the department of motor vehicles of your change of address.
10 .Notify the postal service of your change of address.
11. Make arrangements for disassembling of bulky/difficult items (beds, china cabinets with glass shelves, stereos, entertainment systems etc.).
12. Be sure all wiring for televisions, computers, fax machines, and other electrical items are boxed with or taped to the item it belongs with.
13. Don’t forget to arrange in advance for time off from work to prepare for the move and to be present on move day.
14. Confirm move date and time with your moving company or the rental truck company the week before . If you can, be sure to provide moving company or rental truck company with new telephone number, if applicable
15. Change your address with all newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals to which you subscribe.
16. Notify family and friends to the new address and phone number.
Bright Ideas for One Week Prior to Move Day:
17. Consolidate clearly-marked boxes of fragile items in one area of your home or garage.
18. Select and identify furniture that is fragile. You can easily do this by labeling the item and notifying the movers/or your help.
19. Separate and label items not intended for transport by your movers or items to be placed in a moving truck. Keep items separate that are going to storage.
20. Separate items that should travel with you in your personal vehicle on big move day: Checkbook, keys, passports, plane tickets, jewelry, cash, credit cards and prescription medications, etc.
Bright ideas for the day before:
21. Defrost, drain, wash, and dry refrigerators and freezers. Unhook Washer/Dryer. Be sure water is not present in washer.
22. Have the gas and oil removed from lawn mowers, generators, etc.
23. Be sure to disconnect the propane tank from gas grill. Most movers will not be able to transport the tank on move day.
24. Empty garden hoses.
